August 2022: Authentic Inclusion of Tribal and Native Communities
Savannah Romero (Eastern Shoshone), Communications Strategist
Maria Givens (Coeur d’Alene), Co- Founder of Tahoma Peak Solutions
We live in a time of historical reconsideration, as more and more people recognize that the sins of the past still haunt the present, we must face the injustices of the past in order to advance true equity and inclusion. The systemic erasure of Native American history and the invisibility of contemporary Native people have created substantial misunderstandings of Indigenous Americans and carry serious negative consequences that act as barriers to equity and inclusion. By examining our histories and learning about Native people today, we will shift the narrative about Native people to realize the full abundance, resilience, and resurgence of Native communities today.
In this workshop, we will summarize the history of Native people in the US and how it relates to the larger contemporary conversations of equity and inclusion, the basics of Tribal sovereignty, and how to appropriately communicate with and about Native tribes and communities including pitfalls and stereotypes to avoid. We will provide resources for continued learning and create space to answer any questions you have about Native people but were too afraid to ask.
There is no recording available for this workshop.
Global Inclusion: Practical Applications of an Innovative Model
With Bert Vercamer, Global Inclusion
The unyielding question for our society is: How do we deal with difference? In other words, how do we deal with people who think and behave differently?
To answer these fundamental questions, we recognize that the approaches offered by the intercultural field (IC), the diversity , equity, inclusion, and belonging field (DEIB), and the social justice (SJ) field – all related but different fields – are by themselves insufficient to transform the world around us. This workshop will offer an innovative approach through the emerging field of Global Inclusion. Together we explore a model with relevant competencies and apply it to real life situations.
PRESENTER BIO: Bert Vercamer is a differencist, consultant, strategist, keynote speaker and executive coach, focusing on the key question of how individuals and organizations effectively deal with difference (identities and culture). In his work he combines intercultural learning (focused on the global) and diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging work (focused on domestic diversity) under the banner of Global Inclusion.
He has worked in about 50 countries, and lived in a few, currently residing in New York. He is a former CEO, and has trained and coached over 10000 people, including executives and diplomats. He works with corporations, global non-profits, government agencies, and educational institutions.
He has a clear record of strengthening performance, improving collaboration, impacting bottom line contributions, and enabling team members to contribute in increasingly effective ways.
He has two Masters, in both Economics and Intercultural Relations and received his education in Belgium, Switzerland, South Africa, and the USA. He is a qualified administrator in the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI), the Global Competencies Inventory (GCI) and a number of other tools.
