About the March Workshop
This month, prepare to embark on a transformative journey of understanding and empathy with DLA’s groundbreaking approach to discussing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion through an immersive card game experience. Introducing “The Hand You’re Dealt in America,” a game meticulously crafted to not only entertain but also provoke profound conversations about the unequal challenges individuals face in society. In this innovative game, players will draw cards that dictate their gender, religion, ethnicity, geographic location, housing circumstances, and career—each card symbolizing the unique Hand You’re Dealt. The objective? To foster unity and comprehension through gameplay, enabling players of all perspectives to engage in meaningful discussions on complex issues with an element of enjoyment.
Get ready to bridge divides and broaden horizons as you delve into the intricacies of diversity, equity, and inclusion in a refreshingly dynamic and engaging way. After the game, we will debrief with the game creator and facilitator on what participants experienced and how we can all continue to truly see each other for more than just the “cards” we are dealt.

About the Game Creator
Shane Walsh has been a story teller his entire life. He had the pleasure of working for some of the best story telling companies in the world, The Walt Disney Company and Paramount Pictures. During his time with those companies, he learned the power of story and how it can communicate the most challenging topics in a way that teaches and entertains. When he first began working on this game, he knew he wanted to create something that would allow people to come together and communicate through the game. Over the last five years, he designed, play tested, met with community leaders and worked with diversity equity and inclusion teams to fine tune this game to what you see today. From the outset, his vision was clear: to forge a space where individuals could converge, communicate, and connect on a deeper level. This game isn’t just about winning or losing—it serves as a conduit for fostering calm, rational dialogue, inherently guiding players toward meaningful discussions. Through every iteration and refinement, his commitment remained unwavering—to harness the unifying force of play and storytelling to ignite genuine understanding and empathy.
